CREW TRAINING

A Crew Training Appeal will be officially launched on July 14, 2005.  90% of our crew are from non-maritime backgrounds.  Over the next 5 years it is hoped to raise 10 million towards the training of our  lifeboat crews.  Special events will be organised throughout the country to raise funds for this appeal.  Training is a very important part of a volunteer's commitment towards the lifeboat service, which in turn helps them save lives at sea.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND, 2005

Once again Ballycotton Lifeboat Fundraising Committee are gearing up for one of their major fundraising events of the year.  They have extended their events to take place throughout the weekend this year.

A Table Quiz will kick off the weekend's events in the Schooner Bar, Ballycotton at 9:30 pm.   The quiz is being sponsored by E J Cantillon and it will cost Euro 40 for teams of 4.  First prize will be Euro 160 and the runners up will get Euro 40.

On Saturday evening a Family Treasure Hunt will take place in the village.  Entrance fee is Euro 5 per family.

Sunday sees the busiest day of all for the busy fundraising committee.  The afternoon starts with a Tug of War competition at 1 pm.  This event was re-introduced last year, after a break of many years, and proved a great success with the crowd.  The entrance fee is Euro 50 for teams of 7 and we understand there must be a "skirt", or a member in fancy dress, on each team.

Stormy Stan will be the guest of honour and will be available for photographs.  There are many events taking place on and off the pier. Bric-a-Brac, Football Skills, Greasy Pole, Lifeboat souvenirs will be on sale, Lucky Dip, Siege of Ennis, Swimming competition (for experienced swimmers), Wet T-Shirt competition, to name but a few.  The pier will be closed to all traffic for the day and fishermen are requested to fish off the breakwater for the day.  This is always a great day and one not to be missed.

Also taking place that weekend throughout parts of East Cork will be the annual Church Gate collection.

GOLD BADGE AWARD

Congratulations to our Hon. Treasurer, John Murray, who is to be awarded a gold badge for his long service to the RNLI.  John has been the station's treasurer for 25 years and is also a long serving member of the fundraising committee.  On May 28 2005, at the Royal Kilmainham Hospital, Dublin, John will be presented with his gold badge.  This is the only gold badge to be awarded in Ireland this year and we are honoured that the recipient is a member of this station.

SAVE OUR SOLES

June 8 will see SOS Day being launched.  This is a new fundraising event to encourage people to wear their trainers to work or school and donate at least 2 Euro towards the RNLI.  It is hoping that this will become an annual event.  An SOS fundraising pack can be obtained by contacting any member of our fundraising committee.
